Darlington’s world-famous railway story continues this September as S&DR201 brings steam, locomotives, railway heritage and family activities to Hopetown Darlington.
Following the huge bicentenary celebrations of S&DR200 in 2025, Darlington isn’t leaving its railway history behind.
Instead, S&DR201 celebrates 201 years of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, continuing the story of the railway that helped change transport around the world.
The main celebrations run from 5–27 September 2026 at Hopetown Darlington, with activities for railway enthusiasts, families and visitors interested in discovering why Darlington has such an important place in railway history. Why Is Darlington Celebrating S&DR201?
To understand S&DR201, we need to travel back more than 200 years.
Darlington and the surrounding area played a pivotal role in the development of the modern railway.
The opening of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825 became one of the defining moments in transport history.
In 2025, its 200th anniversary was celebrated through the enormous S&DR200 programme.
Rather than treating the bicentenary as the end of the story, Hopetown plans to continue celebrating the railway’s anniversary every September. S&DR201 therefore marks 201 years and begins the next chapter of Darlington’s railway heritage programme. (Hope Town Darlington)
Ride a Steam Train at Hopetown
This is arguably the biggest reason to visit.
Hopetown’s new heritage railway gives visitors the opportunity to experience steam travel close to the location where pioneering passenger railway history was made.
The new heritage line is approximately 2km (1.25 miles) long, and each steam experience lasts around 20 minutes. (Hope Town Darlington)

This is the experience railway-history enthusiasts should pay particular attention to.
During selected September dates, visitors can travel behind Replica Locomotion No.1 with the Experiment coach.

Tornado Comes to Darlington – 27 September
Railway enthusiasts may want to circle Sunday 27 September 2026 on the calendar.
On the final day of the S&DR201 celebrations, 60163 Tornado is scheduled to take charge of the heritage train.
Tornado is one of Britain’s best-known modern steam locomotives and should make the closing day particularly attractive to railway enthusiasts and photographers.

Steam Festival at Hopetown
The steam rides form part of a much larger programme.

The programme includes a mixture of railway experiences, exhibitions and activities rather than simply watching trains.
That makes this event relevant to two quite different audiences:

S&DR201 also includes a Locomotive Line Up, bringing together historic locomotives and heritage railway vehicles.

This is one of the reasons I’d allow plenty of time for a Hopetown visit rather than arriving solely for a 20-minute steam ride.
Memory of a Journey: Final Station
There’s also an unusual exhibition running throughout the celebration.
Memory of a Journey: Final Station brings together thousands of handmade peg dolls created during the S&DR200 celebrations.
Each represents journeys, memories and people connected through the railway.

It provides an interesting link between the enormous 2025 bicentenary and the beginning of the S&DR201 legacy.
Heritage Weekend – 5 & 6 September
The opening weekend of S&DR201 also coincides with one of Hopetown’s Heritage Weekends.
These bring together Hopetown and several railway organisations, including locomotive preservation and railway heritage groups.
The September Heritage Weekend takes place on Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 September, from 10am–3pm, and is free. Saturdays are aimed more towards families, while Sundays have a stronger railway-enthusiast focus. (Hope Town Darlington)
That makes the opening weekend particularly attractive for visitors travelling specifically for railway heritage.

Yes.
This isn’t intended to be an event exclusively for dedicated railway enthusiasts.
