Located close to Richmond and the A1, Catterick Racecourse offers racing throughout different parts of the year.

Darlington Is Catterick’s Recommended Railway Station

Catterick Racecourse specifically describes Darlington as the most conveniently situated railway station, approximately 15 miles from the racecourse.

That’s an excellent option for visitors travelling from outside the region.

Travel by train → arrive at Darlington → check into your accommodation → travel to Catterick Racecourse.

There are bus connections towards Richmond/Catterick Bridge, although anyone planning to use public transport should check the timetable for their specific raceday. The racecourse also notes that its former shuttle-bus service is no longer operating.

Wednesday 26 August – Ladies’ Day

One of Catterick’s major summer fixtures.

Gates are currently scheduled to open at 12 noon, with the first race at approximately 2:15pm.

For groups of friends or couples looking for an occasion rather than simply an afternoon’s racing, this could be particularly interesting.

Tuesday 8 September – Afternoon Racing

Another opportunity to experience Flat racing as summer begins to turn towards autumn.

The first race is currently scheduled for approximately 1:53pm.

Wednesday 30 September – Afternoon Racing

Another midweek fixture, with the first race currently listed at approximately 1:54pm.

Saturday 17 October – Catterick Dash Meeting

This is one I’d particularly highlight for visitors.

The William Hill Catterick Dash Meeting takes place on a Saturday, making it much easier to turn the races into an overnight or weekend stay.

Gates are currently scheduled for 11:30am, with the first race around 1:35pm.

Tuesday 27 October – Flat Finale

The Flat Finale marks the conclusion of Catterick’s Flat season before attention turns towards jump racing.

Gates are currently listed for 11am, with racing from around 1:10pm.

Friday 20 November – Start of the Jumps

Catterick then switches gears.

The racecourse currently lists 20 November as the Start of the Jumps, with further details due closer to the fixture.

So Catterick isn’t simply a summer attraction.

It gives visitors reasons to return at different times of year.

Sedgefield Racecourse

Travel in a different direction from Darlington and you’ll find Sedgefield Racecourse.

Sedgefield offers a very different racing experience because its programme is built around jump racing.

Think fences, autumn afternoons and National Hunt action.

And once again, Darlington works extremely well as a base.

Darlington to Sedgefield Racecourse

Sedgefield Racecourse says it is approximately 20 minutes from Darlington and that the nearest mainline railway stations include both Darlington and Durham, each around 20 minutes away by car or taxi.

For drivers, the course is around five minutes from Junction 60 of the A1(M).

That makes it another surprisingly accessible day out for guests staying in Darlington.

There are several fixtures worth putting in the diary.

Friday 28 August – Ladies Day

Sedgefield’s Ladies Day 2026 takes place on Friday 28 August.

This is one of the fixtures I’d consider giving its own supporting blog article because people may travel from outside County Durham specifically for the event.

Monday 14 September – Afternoon Jump Racing

Autumn jump racing arrives on Monday 14 September.

Gates are currently listed for 12:30pm, with the first race at 2pm and six races scheduled.

Tuesday 29 September – Afternoon Racing

Another afternoon of jump racing follows on 29 September.

Wednesday 7 October – Afternoon Racing

Sedgefield then continues its autumn season on 7 October.

But the fixture that really catches my attention comes next.

🏆 Durham National – Sunday 18 October

The Durham National is one of Sedgefield’s racing highlights.

For 2026, it’s scheduled for Sunday 18 October, with approximately six jump races. Gates are expected to open around noon, with racing currently indicated from about 1:30pm until 4pm.

The racecourse says this year’s Durham National will once again be a dedicated raceday focused firmly on competitive jump racing, rather than being combined with a family or student event.

This is probably the strongest individual Sedgefield event for us to target with a separate accommodation article.

More Sedgefield Racing in November & December

The season doesn’t finish in October.

The official 2026 fixture list also includes:

Which Racecourse Should You Visit?

If you’ve never been to either, the answer depends partly on what kind of racing you want.

Choose Catterick if you’d like a mixture of Flat and jump racing, easy access from the A1 and the opportunity to combine racing with Richmond and North Yorkshire.

Choose Sedgefield if you particularly enjoy National Hunt racing and want to experience fixtures such as the Durham National.

Or don’t choose.

Visit both.

Because they’re in different directions from Darlington, a longer stay could become a mini North East and North Yorkshire racing break.

Sedgefield works equally well as part of a County Durham break.

You could spend one day at the races and another exploring attractions elsewhere in the county.

Darlington provides a convenient middle ground with good road and rail connections.

Anyone looking for a reason to dress up and enjoy the races has two particularly interesting dates in August.

Catterick Ladies’ Day – Wednesday 26 August

and

Sedgefield Ladies Day – Friday 28 August.

They’re only two days apart.

That’s actually quite unusual from a content perspective.

A visitor who really enjoys racing could potentially build a longer Darlington stay around both Ladies Days.

And for groups of friends, this could make an excellent late-summer break.

Travelling to the Races by Train

This is one of the strongest reasons to consider staying in Darlington.

Darlington Railway Station sits on the East Coast Main Line, making the town accessible from destinations much further afield.
